Making Your Pool Safer and Pool Safety Law Compliant

Planning a pool remodel in the near future? Then it’s important that you familiarize yourself with the pool safety renovations laid out in California’s updated Pool Safety Act (SB442).

Signed into law by Governor Brown, this new law requiring new or remodeled pools and spas to have at least two of seven child safety protective barriers went into effect on January 1, 2018.

Existing pools and spas that aren’t being remodeled are not required to abide by this law (unless they become part of a real estate transaction). But when it comes to protecting the young and most vulnerable among us, it’s a good idea to ensure the safety of your poolscape, whether it’s new or old.

It Only Takes One Inch of Water

All it takes is an inch of water and a few seconds for a child and other vulnerable individuals to find themselves in danger. It’s estimated that around the world as many as 11 people die each day because of unintentional drowning, with 1 in 5 of those being kids under the age of 14.

Nothing beats vigilant adult supervision when it comes to keeping kids safe around water.  But this new law serves as a good reminder that additional steps should be taken to ensure that our pools are safe for our family, friends and communities.

What’s Changed with California’s Pool Safety Law?

Pool owners will now need at least two of the following safety measures in place when building or remodeling their pool:

1. A fence, a wall, or another type of enclosure between your swimming pool and your home (Section 115923). There are a few specific rules about how the enclosure should be built, including it needing to be at least 60 inches in height and equipped with a self-closing and self-latching device.

2. A removable mesh fence. The mesh fencing must meet American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Specifications F2286 and also come with a self-closing, self-latching gate.

3. ASTM F1346-91 compliant and approved pool safety cover. This includes having a cover able to withstand a minimum of 485 pounds and one that can pass Perimeter Deflection Tests, as well as the Surface Drainage Test.

4. Exit alarms on any doors and windows that lead directly to the pool or spa when there isn’t an enclosure between the poolscape and the home. The alarm must make a continuous audible sound.

5. A self-closing and self-latching device with a release mechanism at least 54 inches above the ground on any doors that provide direct access to the pool or spa. It must also be lockable by key and the gate must open away from the swimming pool.

6. An in-pool or in-spa alarm that will sound when there is unauthorized or accidental access to the pool or spa. It’s important to note that swimming protection alarms like those that can be attached to a child do not qualify as a drowning prevention safety feature under this new law.

The law also states that other means of protection may also meet these new requirements, as long as the features provide equal or greater protection and that it meets standards established by the ASTM or American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Health Benefits of Warm Water Hydrotherapy

Hot tubs and spas give their owners a luxurious opportunity to relax and destress every day, and we all know the toll that stress can take on our overall health. But beyond reducing stress, the soothing jets and warm water of a hot tub or spa can provide a number of other important health benefits. The following are just a few of the advantages of hot tub hydrotherapy.

Ease Muscle and Joint Pain

One of the most widely known health benefits of warm water hydrotherapy is muscle and joint relaxation. Buoyancy, heat, and massage work together to ease the aches and pains that come from everyday living. The heat elevates the body temperature which dilates blood vessels and increases blood circulation. At the same time, buoyancy reduces the weight bearing effects of gravity to relieve some of the pressure on joints and muscles. Of course, all this happens while hot tub jets are delivering a soothing massage that eases aches and gently loosens tight muscles.

Help Manage Arthritis Symptoms

The heat from the hot tub or inground spa can also help relieve aches and pains that come from arthritis. In fact, The Arthritis Foundation strongly recommends soaking in warm water:

“The research shows our ancestors got it right. It makes you feel better. It makes the joints looser. It reduces pain and it seems to have a somewhat prolonged effect that goes beyond the period of immersion..”

Warm water therapy is one of the most non-invasive ways to manage and minimize pain and discomfort – plus it is safe and effective with zero side effects!

Get Promote Better Sleep

Stress is one of the biggest deterrents to a good night’s sleep. At the end of a long day, stress hormones still lingering in your body can make it difficult to settle down and fall asleep. The deep relaxation of a hot tub or inground spa helps soothe your body and mind so it’s easier to wind down before bed.

Choosing Your Pool Water Color

Did You Know You Can Select The Color Of Your Pool Water?

When deciding on a pool’s new finish, one thing people often don’t realize is that they can actually choose the color of their pool water. In fact, we recommend that choosing your water color is the first step in selecting a finish. From plaster and quartz to PebbleTec® and Hydrazzo®, each type of finish can create various hues to give swimming pools a unique and personalized look. So what color do you want your pool water to be? The following steps can help answer that question.

Step 1: Choose Your Water Color

The first step is choosing the color you want. Do you want a bright, vibrant blue for a tropical backyard escape or an understated dark blue for your hidden away rocky alcove? You can even choose green or teal water for a swimming pool that really stands out. Your choices include:

  • Deep dark blue
  • Dark blue
  • Medium blue
  • Green
  • Teal
  • Light blue

Understand that the deeper your pool, the more apparent the color will appear. Shallow and step areas typically don’t have the water depth to reflect the color.

Step 2: Choose Your Finish Texture

Whether traditional plaster or quartz, or longer lasting finishes like Hydrazzo® and PebbleTec®, the type of pool finish you select will have an impact on your pool’s water color. Some finishes offer more options than others and choosing the right one will depend on your preferences and budget.

PebbleTec® and Hydrazzo® offer the most water color options, while plaster and quartz are more limited. But you also want to take into account how you use your pool and how long you want the finish to last. For example, quartz and PebbleTec® are more expensive than plaster, but stand up better to chemicals and will therefore last longer.

Step 3: Your Recommended Finishes

Based on the combination of color preference, budget, and how you plan to use your pool, the next step is to choose the finish that best fits all three. To help you out, we have a Pool Finish Selector tool on our website. It walks you through the pool water color choices and the options for each. Of course, a Gardner Outdoor Consultant will be more than happy to help and answer any questions you might have.

Dive Into Fun Facts About Pools

Since 1969, Gardner Outdoor and Pool Remodeling has immersed ourselves entirely in the pool and spa business, having now completed well over 45,000 pool remodeling and renovation projects in Southern California to date. Throughout our years in business, we’ve come across some pretty interesting, astounding and downright dumbfounding facts about pools and spas.

We thought we’d test your swimming pool trivia and share some of the most interesting ones we’ve learned along the way.

1. Evidence of the first swimming pool was around 2,000 BCE

Swimming was clearly a beloved sport for the ancient Egyptians who regularly used the River Nile for practice. We have to assume their favorite event was “try not to get eaten by a crocodile.” Evidence as far back as 2,500 BCE, however, shows that noblemen had their own personal swimming pools used by princes to learn and perfect the sport.

2. Expert swimmers train for up to 35 hours a week

Do you have dreams of making it to the Olympics? Be prepared to put in some serious hours. The average high-level swim competitor will train up to five hours a day for five to seven days a week. That means they can burn around 4,000 calories a day! (Who’s up for McDonald’s?)

3. There are over 10 million swimming pools worldwide

There are plenty of opportunities to learn how to swim, from visiting your local community center, heading to a water park, or building your own backyard swimming pool. As it turns out, Australia has more pools per capita than any other country in the world. If we had a thousand Great Whites lurking off the coastal waters, we’d stay out of the ocean too.

4. People love to play Marco Polo

The cries of “Marco!” and “Polo!” can be heard from neighborhoods across the country nearly every day. As it turns out, it’s the most popular swimming pool game, with Sharks and Minnows coming in at a close second.

5. The Titanic was the first ocean liner to have a swimming pool

It was also the first ocean liner to have a gym! Extra fun fact: The swimming pool is still filled.

6. The space shuttle’s turbo pump can drain a swimming pool in…

Though we don’t recommend trying this at home, the main engines’ turbo pump on the space shuttle can drain the average swimming pool in as little as 25 seconds. That’s almost as fast as Uncle Marty’s famous cannonball.

7. The first known concrete swimming pool was built in Texas

In 1915, a pool known as the Deep Eddy Swimming Pool was built in Austin, Texas. It started as a Colorado River swimming hole, transformed into a resort during the Depression, and now is a popular swim spot operated by the city.

Speak to a Gardener Remodeling Expert Today

As you can imagine, the aforementioned Deep Eddy has undergone some serious remodeling throughout its years in operation. In fact, most pool owners renovate or remodel their pool at least once per decade, be it for safety reasons, structural reasons, or to give their pool a fresh, modern makeover.

Here at Gardner Outdoor and Pool Remodeling, we pride ourselves on being the leading pool contractor here in Southern California. A Gardner remodeling guarantees a beautiful, top quality finished outdoor living space that you will be proud to call your own.

Why is Water Circulation So Important for a Swimming Pool?

It has been said by many professionals in the pool industry that your pool’s water pump is the heart of the pool. Good circulation is as essential to the health of your pool as it is to our own. The experts at Gardner Outdoor and Pool Remodeling explain how having the right pool equipment can help maintain healthy water circulation and extend the life of your pool.

Sluggish Circulation Leads to Sludgy Waters

Just as bad circulation in one’s body can lead to uncomfortable or serious health consequences, improper pool maintenance, and poor water circulation can lead to bad results. Poorly circulated water does not properly disperse the sanitizing agents necessary to keep your pool clean and clear. The result? An unclean, and often green or white-tinged, pool.

Negative Effects on Other Equipment

Many pieces of equipment that help support your pool depend on having a good, healthy circulation flow in order to function properly. Take your heat pump, for example. Your pool’s “flow rate” (i.e. the volume and the speed at which your water is traveling through the circulation system) can either help the heat pump maintain optimal efficiency or it can render it useless if there isn’t an adequate flow rate.

An Increase in Utility Costs

Poor pool water circulation ultimately means a higher utility bill for you. Having an inefficient circulation system not only means that the chemicals are not being properly dispersed (which leads to an increase in chemical usage and costs), but it also means that heated water isn’t being properly circulated from the top of the pool down to the bottom and throughout. Bad water circulation can significantly increase a pool owner’s utility bills.

Tips for Maintaining Proper Water Flow

Maintaining your pool’s water flow and circulation must be a priority when performing pool maintenance. Here a few tips for maintaining proper water flow:

  • Check your pool filter regularly and make sure it is clean (a dirty filter slows flow rates)
  • Check to see if the pool valves are fully open
  • Regularly clean out your pool’s pump basket

If you ever have questions about your pool’s performance, the experts at Gardner Outdoor and Pool Remodeling are here to help. Our team of swimming pool experts is ready to help make sure your pool is operating at its best. Contact us to learn more!

Water Features For Pools of Different Sizes

Water features can really set a swimming pool apart and make it unique. As part of a pool remodel or pool renovation, the right water features can transform an existing pool into a whole new experience of sight and sound.

Before selecting swimming pool water features for your remodel, it’s important to consider not only the shape, but also the size of the pool. Below are some smart tips for selecting the best water features for your inground pool remodel.

Water Features for Small Pools

Having less space in and around a small pool can make choosing the perfect water feature a challenge. Typically, most of them work best by being positioned at one or both ends of the pool. That way, swimmers still have room to comfortably swim in the pool without having to worry about obstructions or obstacles.

  • Consider building a rocky grotto or stacked stone wall with a tumbling waterfall at one edge of the pool so it doesn’t take up any of the actual swimming area.
  • Deck jets take up almost no space and can be placed around the pool as an attractive pool water feature.
  • Sheer descents are gorgeous and project a flat cascading sheet of water that adds sound and motion while taking up very little space.

Water Features for Large Pools

The more space you have, the more choices you have when it comes to water features. The key is not to go overboard and to try to stick to a theme or create a particular atmosphere with the features that you select. For example:

  • Grecian style pools do well with ornate free standing fountains, statues, and spilling water bowls.
  • Modern or contemporary pools should opt for more sleek water features, such as sheer descents, infinity edges, fire bowls, and scuppers.

Water Features Suitable for All Pools

Some pool water features will work with almost any size or style of pool:

  • Inground spas with an added spillway
  • Custom LED lighting
  • Laminar jets that add a touch of color to deck jets

With so many different designs and styles available, choosing the right water features for your inground pool remodel can seem overwhelming. But not to worry! We invite you to contact the Outdoor Consultants here at Gardner Outdoor and Pool Remodeling. Together, we’ll discover the perfect new water features for your pool.

The Most Energy Efficient Hot Tubs

Lower Cost to Own and Operate

Any spa owner will tell you that the expense of owning a spa (or a pool, for that matter) doesn’t end with the purchase price. It costs money to run a spa between the pump, heater, chemicals and other expenses. For example, the cost of the heater and non-variable pumps for pools is only exceeded by one other piece of equipment in a home; the air conditioner. So, it behooves anyone in the market to purchase a spa to do their research to not only compare the initial cost of the spa, pouring a concrete pad, running electrical and delivery but, also, the ongoing expense.

The JetPak Therapy System Saves Energy

Because Bullfrog Spas are built completely differently, they utilize about 90% less plumbing than conventional hot tubs. Less plumbing equals less friction and less energy used to get water to the jets. In addition, most of the water delivery system in a Bullfrog Spa is inside the spa, not sitting in a tangle of unheated pipe under the spa. This is something that the other spa manufacturers won’t bring up because you can’t see the plumbing in a showroom. This unique and patented energy-saving feature will keep monthly power bills surprisingly low and will keep you relaxed and worry free!

Leaks and Hidden Cost

Bullfrog Spa’s patented technology that reduces their plumbing by 90% means far fewer leak problems (almost non-existent) with Bullfrog Spas. Imagine a standard spa with 60 jets – every single one of those jets has a pipe connected behind it; 60 jets, 60 connections. 60 connections is 60 opportunities for leaks. Bullfrog Spas have, due to their patented JetPacks, 6 or 8 main connections; one for each JetPack.  Much less of a chance for leaks. In fact, service companies complain that they don’t have enough repair work every time a Bullfrog Spa is sold. Bad for them, good for you.

Full Foam Insulated Hot Tubs

Bullfrog’s full-foam design insulates the spa completely to prevent heat escape. Every single Bullfrog Spa model meets or exceeds the stringent energy guidelines of the California Energy Commission (CEC). With the superior energy efficiency, you will enjoy keeping extra money each month almost as much as you will enjoy relaxing in your spa.

Bullfrog Spas utilize an ultra energy-efficient foam throughout the interior of the spa structure to lock in more heat. A full foam insulated Bullfrog Spa locks in the heat and very little escapes to the outside air. In a poorly insulated conventional hot tub more heat is lost to the outside environment, requiring the hot tub to use more energy to keep the water warm. Couple this with their ABS frame (compared to wood subject to rot and expansion/retraction cracking), there are fewer points of ongoing expense and maintenance.

Bullfrog Spas in LA and Orange County

Why are Bullfrog Spas so differently designed compared to the other guys? Because the industry has remained design stagnant for half a century. Bullfrog came in and reverse engineered the spa design to address all the points of failure or inefficiency it could. While they may be the “new guys” on the block (only 22 years!) they have completely turned the industry on its head.

Gardner Outdoor and Pool Remodeling is proud to offer Bullfrog Spas through our Anaheim showroom. After exhaustive research, we chose Bullfrog Spas for their incredible looks, energy efficiency, and industry-leading innovation. They are built like no other hot tub or spa and are a truly unique and superior product. We believe they fit in perfectly with our ongoing commitment to provide our clients with only the best outdoor living products on the market today.

What Affects My Swimming Pool Water Chemistry?

Even with proper care and maintenance, a swimming pool’s water can still get out of balance and need a little adjusting. Your water chemistry is constantly changing due to environmental factors, usage, and even the toys you put in the pool. Learn five factors that play a major role in your swimming pool water chemistry, and how you can control common issues in this area.

Swimming Pool Water Chemistry: pH Balance

pH is the major factor you should keep balanced when maintaining your swimming pool water chemistry. pH refers to the level of acidity in your water, and comes from the use of chemicals to keep it balanced and free from contaminants and algae growth. You want your pH to remain between 7.4 to 7.6 at all times to avoid burning eyes and to allow for free chlorine use.

Swimming Pool Alkalinity

Closely connected to pH, the alkalinity is the amount of base, or hydrogen ions, in your water. It also refers to the ability of your water to contain and reduce the loss of hydrogen. Keeping your alkalinity balanced helps to keep your pH levels optimal when additional acids or bases are introduced to the water. You want your pool’s alkalinity to be between 80 to 150 parts per million (PPM).

Pool Water Calcium Hardness Levels

Your pool has dissolved calcium salts in its water. These can increase or decrease from the oils and salts on people’s skin, from debris that falls into your pool, and from the chemical reactions that form from maintaining your water balance. You want to keep these levels around 250 ppm. If the calcium level is too low, it can create pitting in the plaster, while high amounts of calcium make the water cloudy and can result in scaling.

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) in Your Swimming Pool

When a pool has been in use for a long time, things like suntan lotion, chlorides, dirt, debris, algaecides, and other contaminants can be introduced into the water from leaves, tree bark, dirt, skin chemistry, and other factors. TDS can’t be avoided, but it should be kept under 450 ppm.

Pool Chlorine Levels

Chlorine is, for many people, a vital part of keeping the chemistry in their water properly balanced. Too much chlorine, and you’ll end up with burning in the eyes and a strong odor. Too little, and the pool’s alkalinity and pH will be out of control, leading to things like cloudy water and algae growth. Ideal chlorine levels should be at 0.2ppm or less, and free chlorine should be in the range of 1 to 3 ppm.

With the addition of an umbrella and a couple of lounge chairs, you’ll find yourself transport to a Caribbean island. Oh, waiter!

7. The Swim-Up Bar

Who wants to get out of the pool to eat or drink? Popular at many resorts, the swim-up bar with built-in bar stools is a fun and unique element to add to your pool. It’s a way to enjoy the water while also enjoying a drink or snack. Connect it to an outdoor and kitchen and you’ve got the ultimate party space.

8. Pool Mosaics

Adding a pool mosaic as part of your renovation project will make your swimming pool uniquely you. From geometric designs to animals to favorite sports team logos, pool mosaics allow you to express your individuality. They can even be custom designed to be almost anything you like. 9. The Fire Pit

Add a whole different dynamic to your backyard with a firepit. Perfect for cool nights, they add light and warmth to your backyard. A firepit will quickly become the go-to place for your guests during any party. Concerned that you don’t have a lot of room? No problem. Look into a zero elevation firepit where you can turn it on during cool evenings or place a lounge chair over it when not in use.

10. The Lighting

One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to showcase your poolscape is to update your pool lighting. Plus, by upgrading to LED lighting, you’ll be doing both your wallet and the environment a favor. Lighting styles and options have greatly expanded over the years to let you control the colors and mood of your backyard. Essential Summer Safety Tips for Pool Owners

With summer just around the corner—and National Water Safety month this May—now is the perfect time to make sure those long, sunny days sitting poolside are accompanied by some smart water safety habits. Because, of course, the best way for you and your family to have fun at the pool this summer is staying safe.

Although most pool safety practices may seem obvious, there are still some that can often be overlooked. Here are some of the biggest pool safety mistakes that you should be careful to avoid this summer.

When to Learn to Swim

One common mistake parents and guardians make is thinking that their child is too young to learn to swim. Even at very young ages, just a few months old in fact, children can learn infant aquatic survival skills. These essential skills will allow children to stay above water and even make it to the edge of the pool on their own should the need arise. Check with your local swim academies to see if they offer infant survival skill classes.

Is Your Pool Completely Safe?

If you have an older pool, drain entrapments can be a commonly overlooked danger. You should make sure your pool’s drains and pump systems are in compliance with state and federal guidelines. If you need to, contact a local pool remodeling company to update your old equipment to new pumps and drains that adhere to strict safety standards.

Also, be sure to pay attention to the area around the pool. When not in use, keep your pool deck and surrounding areas clear of toys and other objects that can be tripped on or can lure children towards the open water. Better yet, install a safety fence around the pool. These can be basic fences or decorative wrought iron fences that can even enhance the beauty of the poolscape.

Depending on Floaties and Life Jackets

It’s very important to remember that floaties are not life-saving devices. They are to help children stay afloat and enjoy the water, but should never be depended on for anything more. Even life jackets are only to aid in helping to protect children. There is no substitute for constant adult supervision.

Keep It Safe

It is always better to be safe than sorry. Even if they seem obvious, make sure you and your family review and commit to the following tried-and-true pool rules. You can even have every member in your family take the Pool Safely Pledge.

  • Do not swim alone or allow others to swim alone. Always use the buddy system, even in public.
  • Make sure you and your loved ones know how to swim properly.
  • Learn CPR
  • Do not leave children unsupervised by, in, or around the water.
  • Have inexperienced swimmers and young children wear flotation devices even out of the water. Only take them off when in close contact with a trusted adult.
  • Be cautious around water even if you do not plan to swim.
  • Avoid alcohol use and consumption when around water.
  • Designate one adult to be the “water watcher” so that there’s no confusion about who’s supposed to be monitoring the water
  • Install barriers around your home pool and hot tub.
  • Make sure pool enclosures surround entire pool and are at least four feet high. Be sure there are no gaps or holes in or around the enclosure. Make sure all latches are completely secure, and that there are no tables or other objects near the enclosure that can be used to climb over the enclosure.
