OFF-SEASON POOL REMODELING

Timing is Everything

by “The Pool Prof”

If you ever fell in love because you crossed the street at just the right moment or you missed getting hit by a falling piano because you stopped to pick up a penny, you know that timing is everything.

That is certainly true when it comes to making key buying decisions and scheduling big projects. There are predictable “sweet spots” in every industry, when business is booming and the demand is predictably high. In the pool resurfacing and remodeling business, that time is between mid-May through August.

Most pool remodeling companies do 40 to 50 percent of their business between Memorial Day and Labor Day. During the summer months, demand is often so high that companies have crews working seven days a week. Companies hire extra employees, and it’s not unusual for crews to work on two or three pool projects a day.

Summer is a time when you should be enjoying your pool—not remodeling it. By planning ahead and scheduling your pool remodel or resurfacing project during the industry’s “off season”—typically September through April, depending on where you live—you can simplify and streamline the process.

If you complete your project during the off-season, it will probably be completed faster because companies are more likely to assign a crew exclusively to your project until it’s done. They can also be more flexible in working around your schedule and time preferences, which will result in shorter project calendars and fewer delays. What’s more, some materials—such as pool finishes—tend to cure better in cooler weather, which reduces the possibility of craze cracking or shrinkage cracks.

It’s easy to procrastinate, especially on big projects like pool resurfacing or remodeling. But if you plan ahead and get that project completed sooner than later, you’ll be glad you did when you’re swimming under the summer sun.
